What you Can Do

To Help

The United States Environmental Protection Agency has identified storm water runoff as a leading cause of pollution of our national waterways. Oil, dirt, garbage, salt, grease,  soap, litter and chemicals wash off our roadways and lawns and into roadside storm   sewers, and later empty untreated into waterways. Help reclaim a priceless resource and protect our water by following these tips to cut back storm water pollution of  backyard creeks, streams, ponds and rivers. It’s a simple individual responsibility that makes a positive impact on our community.

Basement Backup Insurance

If a back-up occurs, the homeowner is responsible for any repair and replacement costs because most insurance companies do not cover the damage and clean-up costs of sewer line back-ups. Most insurance companies offer this optional coverage on your homeowner’s policy, averaging $50 per year. Please contact your insurance agent to inquire about coverage and deductibles for sewer back-ups.

Disconnecting Downspouts

During periods of rain, extraordinary amounts of water enter the combined sewer system through these connections causing the capacity of the system to be exceeded. The excess water in the sewers backs up into the basements of homes or overflows into the Ohio River. Both of these situations represent significant public health concerns.  If your downspouts are connected to the sanitary sewer system, reduce the risk of flooding your home or your neighbors by removing your downspouts.

HSB in your Community

Our crews are out in your community every day working hard to improve and repair the wastewater infrastructure in Huntington. These improvement/repair projects help to protect the health and safety of you and your neighbors, as well as reduce the risk of environmental impacts associated with a failing infrastructure.

Overflow Notification

HSB will issue an advisory at the top of the webpage when a significant rainfall is predicted or recorded for anywhere in the HSB’s service area. The advisory will remain in effect for 72 hours after the rainfall.

To protect yourself and your family from health concerns associated with sewer overflows, avoid contact with water near and around overflows. This includes activities such as boating, wading, fishing and swimming.
