The Huntington Sanitary Board Engineering Department
consists of three (3) employees and was formed in 1999 to do
quality control on all work done for the Sanitary Board by outside
contractors and to oversee all connections made to any existing
Sanitary Board lines, manholes or other apparatus.
Engineering also reviews plans from outside
contractors to do work in the treatment plant and in the 31 lift
stations that make up the HSB System.
In 1999, this department drew up blueprints
for the renovation of the bar and grit machines at the Treatment
Plant. Doing all measurements, ordering pre-cut
pieces and bidding out the labor, the Sanitary Board was able to save over
$500,000 on the complete renovation over the price of buying new equipment
and having
it installed by the manufacturer.
The Engineering Department has also upgraded
six (6) new lift stations in the last two (2) years.
This year the Huntington Sanitary Board Engineering
Department has designed two (2) new sewer systems, the Lawson
Heights Sewer Extension and the Harveytown
Sewer Line Extension. The Lawson Heights project, a gravity
system, is scheduled to start construction in the spring of 2004. We
are also working
with Region II Planning and Development in designing a sewer line extension
project to serve 31 homes and Heritage Farm in the Harveytown Section
of Huntington.
The Engineering Department Surveyors shot elevations
and worked with the manufacturers to size pumps and did the
complete set of construction
drawings
for this project.
C.T. Consultants of Huntington will review the plans and advise HSB
Engineering Department in the completion of this project. HSB
will be compensated
for all layout, right-of-ways and pre-construction work that has
been done
by HSB
employees. (Approximately $40,000 will be saved on construction and
design services).
The Engineering Department is also upgrading
sewer maps, both sanitary and storm, throughout the City of Huntington
and the surrounding areas
that are
served by
the HSB. With the help of the CAD/GIS person, lines can be tracked
for problem areas entered into a database and put on a list for preventative
maintenance
of the sewer lines.
The HSB sewer department is also under the Engineering
Department, this allows the video inspection camera to also assist
in line repairs
and
inspections.
All applications for taps are inspected for
line location, line depth and size to help plumbers or home owners
in making their
connections
to the
site sewer
system as early as possible.
If a new sewer tap is required the HSB field
crew will make the connection to the main sewer and extend
the service line to the
owner’s property line.
As many businesses in Huntington grow and new
projects and expansions occur, working with these businesses
in relocating sewer; extending
sewers and
making connections to the existing sewer lines are all done
under the watchful eye
of the Huntington Sanitary Board Inspections and Engineering
Department.
